Interactive Story of a Danube SwabianExhibition on the topic of "Heavy Fabrics"
In cooperation with the Danube Swabian Central Museum (DZM) in Ulm, interactive exhibitions on the clothing of Danube Swabian women were designed. Our team focused on the heavy, multi-layered dresses.

Features

Our exhibition was an interactive wall with printed illustrations and texts. Interactive elements were highlighted with a projector and could be activated by touch.

The wall tells the fictional story of Marianne, a young Danube Swabian woman. From her youth, when she wore the elaborate dress for the first time, to her wedding. The various stations show which social ideals the women had to fulfill and what problems the sometimes several kilo-heavy dresses with many starched petticoats caused.

Process

The design process was divided into two parts: At the beginning was the research, which mainly consisted of visiting the DZM and the sources provided by the museum. We had a long ideation phase in which we generated ideas individually and then evaluated and combined them in the team.

We had sketched some ideas and built the most promising ones as cardboard prototypes in miniature, which helped us in the decision-making process. Ultimately, we decided on the interactive wall, for which one had to walk through a closet in the cardboard prototype to have a thematically appropriate transition, which we then omitted due to space constraints.

After the decision, we already had a good idea of the story to be told and possible animations, but collected more inspiration and then created illustrations for the entire wall.

Once this basis was established, we moved into a stronger division of tasks: my teammates unified the illustrations into a jointly defined style and created animations, while I took care of the technical prototyping.
